Reflux (Spitting Up)

Most babies spit up. If the baby is spitting up and not gaining weight or is in pain, then the patient needs to be seen. However, you can try over the counter maalox or mylanta (1/4 tsp up to 4 times per day) if the pain is not severe and the baby is gaining weight well. If the reflux continues to worsen, becomes projectile, or the maalox or mylanta does not help with pain, then please call the office for an appointment. If the baby is spitting up without pain and is gaining weight well, then the baby will likely improve as he gets older. Keeping the baby upright after feedings, elevating the head of the bed, and allowing him to burp himself (instead of forceful burps) will help as well.
